We have seen the phrase lurking around on our favourite beauty websites and in popular health magazines and while it has been tempting to ignore, ladies it’s time to face the cold hard facts – ‘sugar face’ is real.  While there has been more than enough scientifically backed reasons to convince us to quit sugar, when it comes to our faces and quest for beauty – sugar could be causing more harm than we first thought.

Aside from wreaking havoc with our bodies, keeping us up at night, weakening our immune system and causing inflammation – when it comes to comes to skin care – it’s mass consumption is a leading factor in premature ageing.  Sugar speeds up the breakdown of collagen, which is key to maintaining that firm and bouncy youthful skin. This means that if you are one who invests hundreds of dollars in anti ageing creams but have your 3pm biscuit and coffee mix, then you are throwing money down the drain.

Large intake of sugar also weakens our immunity, which means that our skin is less resistant to bacteria. So when our grandma said eat less chocolate to beat those breakouts, we should have listened. Furthermore, sugar triggers insulin production, which creates an increase in testosterone, leading to larger pores and oily skin.

Now that we have bombarded you with the bad news, the good news according to dermatologists is that you can start to reverse the effects of sugar face within 92 hours. Cut sugar cold turkey and you will notice improved skin tone, radiance and less oily skin within a few days. This means cutting all artificial sugar and limiting natural sugar intake.
