On Cloudsurfer 3: A Surreal Take on the Daily Trainer

The On Cloudsurfer 3 feels like a significant step forward for the Cloudsurfer line.
The previous version was built around smooth transitions and easy running, but never quite delivered the complete experience we were looking for. Version three feels far more intentional, delivering the smooth, efficient and reliable comfort you want from a shoe designed to cover the bulk of your weekly running.
There is more structure through the midfoot, noticeably better stability and a stronger sense of responsiveness underfoot. The result is a smooth, easy-rolling daily trainer that feels at home across easy runs, recovery days and regular weekday mileage.
At the centre of that change is the first combination of On’s new Surreal™ superfoam with CloudTec Phase™ geometry. Surreal™ brings a softer, lighter and more responsive cushioning platform, while the reworked CloudTec Phase™ structure helps control that softness and guide the foot smoothly through each stride.
The Cloudsurfer 3 remains very much an everyday running shoe, but it now feels lighter, softer and more energetic than before. More importantly, all of those elements feel like they are working towards the same purpose.
Outsole
For a shoe built to handle a large portion of your weekly mileage, the Cloudsurfer 3 has an appropriately substantial outsole.
There is plenty of rubber underneath the shoe, providing the traction and durability you would expect from an everyday road trainer. It also adds to the sense of structure underfoot, complementing the broader and more stable feel of the new midsole platform.
That sturdier construction suits the Cloudsurfer 3 well. This is a shoe designed to be used regularly rather than saved for one particular session, so dependable road grip and durability matter more here than shaving every possible gram.
The outsole itself is not necessarily one of the headline changes, but it plays an important supporting role. It gives the Cloudsurfer 3 the solid foundation needed for easy running, recovery sessions and consistent everyday mileage.
Midsole
The midsole is where the Cloudsurfer 3 really separates itself from the previous version.
At its centre is Surreal™, On’s new proprietary superfoam. According to On’s testing, Surreal™ is 15.5% softer, 15% lighter and 23.3% more responsive than Helion™. Those figures come from simulations conducted at On Labs, but they align with the broader direction of the shoe: more cushioning, less weight and noticeably more energy underfoot.
Importantly, this does not translate into an excessively plush or unstable ride. The cushioning feels soft, but there is control to it. Rather than sinking deeply into the platform, you get a balanced and protective feel that absorbs plenty of impact while still giving the foot something stable to work from.
The other half of the equation is the re-engineered CloudTec Phase™ geometry.
CloudTec Phase™ uses strategically positioned Cloud elements that compress progressively as you move through the stride. For the Cloudsurfer 3, On has reworked that geometry around Surreal™, with the aim of creating deeper compression and a smoother roll from landing through to toe-off.
This is also the first time On has combined its new Surreal™ superfoam with CloudTec Phase™, and it is the interaction between the two that gives the Cloudsurfer 3 its character.
Surreal™ provides the cushioning and energy, while CloudTec Phase™ gives that cushioning direction. The result is less about simply making the shoe softer and more about making the whole platform work more naturally underneath you. Compared with the Cloudsurfer 2, there is noticeably more responsiveness as well.
At around 5:00/km pace, it settles naturally into a comfortable rhythm. The ride feels smooth and stable, without constantly encouraging you to increase the pace. That makes it very easy to control an easy run and simply let the shoe roll underneath you.

Upper
The comfort-focused direction continues into the re-engineered Warp Knit upper.
On foot, the Cloudsurfer 3 fits true to size, with a slightly more generous amount of volume through the midfoot and toe box. It gives the forefoot room to settle naturally without feeling excessively wide or sloppy.
The upper itself has a distinctly plush feel. There is plenty of padding around the tongue and collar, adding to the step-in comfort and matching the more protective character of the shoe underfoot.
Despite that softer construction, the upper still provides enough structure to keep the foot secure for regular running. On describes the reworked upper as being designed to adapt to the foot while maintaining support, and that combination of comfort and structure fits the overall direction of the shoe well.
For runners with particularly narrow feet, the additional volume may be noticeable. For most runners, though, it creates an accommodating and comfortable fit that makes sense for a shoe designed around everyday mileage.
Ed’s Perspective
The Cloudsurfer 3 is a huge improvement over the previous version, mainly because the whole shoe now feels more purposeful and complete. There is more structure through the midfoot, a noticeably more stable platform and a stronger sense of control through the stride, while the added responsiveness stops it from feeling heavy or flat.
The cushioning is soft, but still feels controlled and substantial rather than overly plush. There is plenty of protection underfoot, yet the shoe remains balanced and composed, making it easy to settle into a comfortable rhythm. That works particularly well at easier paces, where the Cloudsurfer 3 feels calm and controlled without constantly pushing you to run faster than planned, while still providing enough energy to keep the ride engaging.
Compared with the Cloudsurfer 2, there is a noticeable improvement in responsiveness. I have also included some strides during runs in the Cloudsurfer 3, and it transitions into faster running naturally, adding useful versatility without shifting away from its primary role as a smooth, comfort-focused daily trainer.
I see the Cloudsurfer 3 fitting particularly well into weekday jogging, recovery runs and easy mileage. For my own training, it feels best suited to runs of around an hour, where the combination of protection, stability and smooth transitions make running feel easy and enjoyable.
For runners looking for a more cushioned and versatile daily trainer, I can also see it handling longer runs approaching 90 minutes comfortably, particularly when the priority is keeping the legs protected and the ride controlled from start to finish.
Final Thoughts
The On Cloudsurfer 3 feels like the shoe the Cloudsurfer platform was building towards.
It is softer and more protective than before, but the biggest improvement is how much more stable, structured and responsive the entire experience has become.
Bringing Surreal™ superfoam and CloudTec Phase™ together for the first time gives the shoe a clear identity. There is cushioning when you need protection, enough structure to keep the ride controlled and enough responsiveness to make everyday mileage feel a little easier.
For easy runs, recovery days, weekday jogging and longer aerobic efforts, it now feels like a much more convincing all-round daily trainer.
The Cloudsurfer 3 is not trying to be On’s fastest shoe, nor does it need to be. Its strength is in providing a smooth, balanced and highly protective ride for the kilometres that make up most of your training week.
For runners who want comfort without excessive softness, and stability without moving into a traditional support shoe, the Cloudsurfer 3 feels like a much more complete proposition.
