Namaste: 5 Tips To Prepare You For Your First Hot Yoga Class

Hot Yoga, once reserved for the L.A. elite (well that’s what the glossy magazines would have us believe anyway), nowadays THE yoga class to take. Why the heat? It is believed to help achieve deeper stretches and to boost heart rate, adding a stronger cardio component to your workout. But before you run and sign up for the next session, there are a few factors to consider such as temperatures reaching as high as 105 degrees. Not for the faint hearted, with even the most seasoned athletes finding it a challenging class to take. So here is what you need to know. 

1. Hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate: We have heard of working up a sweat, but hot yoga takes this to new heights. Ensure you hydrate in the hours leading up to your class and not just an hour before class or following your workout. It is suggested you add an extra 1L to your normal routine. 

2. Prepare: While you may be able to get away with missing the necessities during that last minute gym dash to use the treadmill, rest assured your hot yoga class won’t be as forgiving. Ensure you take your yoga mat with you. The moisture on the floor means you won’t be able to exercise safely without one. Take a towel to avoid the embarrassing water puddle that is sure to form below you and a water bottle to rehydrate and avoid passing out. It’s really no laughing matter.

3. It’s in the clothing: Far from a vanity show, the right yoga clothes will ensure you don’t restrict your movement.  The expected sweating and heat also serves as a pre-warning for those who love to cover up with baggy tops and pants. No one will judge, so avoid the uncomfortable workout and stick with a form-fitting outfit. 

4. Listen to your body. We know that like with any class, the instructors will ask you to push your body. However there is a difference between burning muscles from the downward dog and feeling dizzy. Ensure you strike a fine balance between working hard and not pushing yourself too far. If it’s your first time or even tenth, ensure you take breaks when necessary. 

5. Know your yoga etiquette: While a yoga buddy will boost your commitment to the cause, leave the chit chatter to before and after the class. Ensure you enter the room quietly as many will start their meditation right before class. The same rule applies to classes which call for absolute quiet. Finally, lay off the perfume and body lotions, as the heat will intensify all scents.
