What’s the Gel-Nimbus 28 all about?
The Gel-Nimbus is Asics’ premium neutral, max-cushioned daily trainer, built for comfort on easy and steady road runs. It’s a shoe designed to feel relaxed and predictable underfoot, prioritising cushioning and protection over speed or responsiveness.
Now in its 28th iteration, the Nimbus remains a key model in the Asics lineup and a long-time staple in many runners’ rotations. It reflects the brand’s Sound Mind, Sound Body philosophy by delivering a consistently comfortable, well-balanced ride that’s easy to trust day after day.
Since the major update from the Nimbus 24 to the 25, Asics has focused on refinement rather than reinvention. The overall formula hasn’t changed much year to year, and that’s a good thing - the Nimbus works because it’s familiar, reliable and doesn’t try to do too much.

What’s new in the Gel-Nimbus 28?
Stack height and drop remain the same, but this version feels noticeably lighter and more comfortable than previous models. The ride is smoother and less bulky, especially over longer easy runs.
The new engineered knit upper, paired with a plush collar lining, provides a secure yet comfortable fit with good breathability. Updates to the heel construction and pull tab give the shoe a cleaner look while also helping reduce overall weight.
The updated Hybrid ASICSGRIP outsole maintains durability and traction while contributing to a lighter feel underfoot.
A softer, updated version of PureGEL provides more comfortable landings while keeping the signature shock absorption. It keeps the same FF Blast Plus midsole as before, though this version feels a bit springier.
A few of our team members have been testing the shoes over the past few weeks. Keep reading to see their thoughts.
Testing the Gel-Nimbus 28: Early Feedback

I’m absolutely loving the new Nimbus 28 and whilst Asics have used the same midsole material as the Nimbus 27, it feels a lot smoother, responsive and more balanced underfoot. They have become a staple in my rotation for mid week runs which is usually when my legs are feeling heavy and sore from a Tuesday workout. Version 28 offers a lot of protection and I don’t feel as though my lower limbs are having to work overtime to stabilise when in contact with the ground, this is a big win for me.
There is a lot less bulk in this new version which I am sure many runners out there would love to hear and the improved upper fits nicely too.
I would recommend trying your usual size and potentially half a size up at the same time - some may find that the shoes run on the slightly smaller side.
Overall they are a very runnable model (just as comfortable for walking as well) and perfect for the runner who prioritises comfort over performance.

From my first run, the Nimbus 28 felt instantly lighter and more comfortable than the 27 on my feet, with cushioning that really seems to focus on absorbing impact. I like that the ride feels soft and protective without being mushy, which I’ve appreciated on days when my legs are feeling a bit beaten up. The new engineered mesh upper stands out as well and gives me confidence that it will hold up over time. The Nimbus 28 is a shoe I will continue to reach for on recovery days and easy jogs, especially when comfort is the main priority.

The new update feels smoother and more controlled underfoot, with a comfortable, stable ride that’s easy to settle into. It feels less bulky than the Nimbus 27 and this allows me to flow through my stride more naturally, especially at relaxed paces.
I have no negatives to report on so far - it’s been super comfortable straight out of the box. The Nimbus 28 fits best in my rotation for 30-60 minute easy jogs, typically Monday and Thursday runs where comfort and impact protection are the priority.

The new Nimbus is perfect for easy and recovery days. It stays true to what the shoe has always been known for, but with a lighter feel underfoot while maintaining the same cushioning and comfort from previous versions. Despite the softness of the midsole, it still feels pretty stable, offering a confident and controlled ride.
It’s probably a touch too soft to replace my go-to daily workhorse, but it fits perfectly into the rotation as a dedicated recovery shoe. After bigger sessions, the Nimbus really helps by absorbing impact, making those easy runs feel gentler on the legs.
Wrap-Up
The Nimbus 28 stays true to what the shoe does best. Small refinements across the midsole, outsole, and upper result in a lighter, more comfortable ride, while keeping the Nimbus feel intact. For runners who value comfort and consistency, the Nimbus 28 is a dependable choice. Similar shoes in this category include the Brooks Glycerin 23, Nike Vomero 18, and Saucony Triumph 23 - all designed for daily training with a plush, cushioned ride.
Available in multiple widths and a wide range of colourways, Asics has ensured the Nimbus 28 caters to a broad range of runners and preferences.
